10 Critical
Leadership Practices for Managing Toward the Future
Excerpted from Carpe Manana by Price Pritchett
- Be a Relentless Talent Scout
Recruitment must become part of your everyday consciousness.
- Glue Good People to Your Organization
To pull this off, you have to get in tune with what turns on
today’s employees. Consider the whole person in your efforts
to keep people on board.
- Create a Learning Environment
A generous training budget should be accepted as a basic cost
of doing business.
- Aim Your Efforts Toward Value Creation
You can be a good soldier, and your people can bust their tails,
but that doesn’t necessarily add to earnings growth. Some
things simply may not be worth doing.
- Weave a Web of Connectivity and Collaboration
Forget about being a boss. You’re now a web-master. The
old management paradigm was about command and control over people.
The new model is about connecting them together.
- Push the Organization Toward e-Literacy and Net Readiness
Push the education process. Read books and magazines
about e-commerce and the impact of the Internet. Spend time
on the web. Do research, knock around in a chat room. Get personally
engaged in how the new economy operates.
- Set the Stage for Innovation
If we are not aggressively managing toward innovation,
we’re managing the organization toward extinction. Considering
the fact that failure is the first cousin of innovation, we
need to establish a safety zone for experimentation.
- Rev up the Organization’s Operating Velocity
The more business speeds up, the better our peripheral
vision must become. We need this casual alertness to what’s
happening around us in the rest of the organization so we move
forward together in an effective, coordinated effort.
- Cut Through the Blur of Complexity and Change
Your job is to simplify. To bring clarity. Without
a clear sense of priorities and an acute aiming point that aligns
people’s efforts, the organization will be plagued by
attention deficit disorder.
- Free the Body, Capture the Heart
Arouse passion. You want people fired up from within.
So give them a cause. Once you’ve pointed people in the
right direction and triggered a powerful internal drive, you
need to get the hell out of the way.
